Washington is compact, but its housing stock spans roughly 150 years, and the era of the house drives the project more than the square footage does.

The late-1800s homes near the Washington Theatre and through the borough centre bring the oldest-construction problems: plaster over lath, framing that predates dimensional lumber standards, and mechanical systems retrofitted across several generations without documentation. New Jersey Permits, and Why They Differ From Pennsylvania's

New Jersey requires construction permits for nearly all decks, additions, and structural work regardless of size — noticeably stricter than Pennsylvania's thresholds a short drive west. Washington Borough permits are issued under New Jersey's statewide Uniform Construction Code through the Borough office on Belvidere Avenue, split into building, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection subcodes, each reviewed and inspected separately at defined stages. Warren County becomes involved on larger structural projects. Zoning approval runs on its own track and governs setbacks, coverage, and height on any addition.
